As part of Sydney PEN’s Free Voices series at the Sydney Writer's Festival, Sydney PEN will present Dan Oakes, senior reporter with the ABC Investigations team and author of 'The Afghan Files', in conversation with The Saturday Paper editor Maddison Connaughton, to explore the concept of ‘freedom to read, freedom to write, freedom to speak.' They will discuss the ongoing threats to press freedom and what we as citizens can do to fight back.
Dan Oakes (Australian)
Dan Oakes is a senior reporter with the ABC Investigations team. In June 2019 he exposed serious allegations of war crimes committed by Australian special forces in Afghanistan through a series of seven stories known as ‘The Afghan Files’. The leak of Australian Defence Force documents lead to Dan being threatened with criminal charges that were ultimately not prosecuted.
Maddison Connaughton (Australian)
Maddison Connaughton is editor of The Saturday Paper. She was previously features editor at Vice, and has written for publications including Vox, The Age and The Australian. She is a former finalist for the Walkley Award for young Australian journalist of the year.
